SAS Institute Ships SAS/IntrNet Software, Release 1.1

Expanding decision support and data warehousing to the Web

SAS Institute is now shipping the newest version of SAS/IntrNetTM software, release 1.1. An extension to the award winning SAS software that allows users to access corporate information and powerful decision support tools easily across the World Wide Web, this new release expands Java connectivity, as well as providing support for the Java Development Kit standard JDK1.1.

SAS/IntrNet software allows developers to build Web interfaces that access data warehouses and data mining applications. SAS software provides users access to data throughout their organisations, standardises and stores data in data warehouses, and provides decision support tools necessary to analyse that data. These new Java tools integrate the power of SAS software, Java, and the World Wide Web, providing powerful thin clients to desktops world-wide.

New to release 1.1 are SAS/Connect driver for Java, Tunnel feature, and SAS driver for JDBCTM components, which are all 100 percent pure Java certified. SAS/Connect driver for Java allows Java-based applications to connect directly to SAS servers with full client/server functionality.

The Tunnel feature uses industry standard tunnelling techniques to enable Java applets to access data from sources other than the originating server. Together, SAS/Connect driver for Java and Tunnel feature allow Java applets to take advantage of SAS softwares ability to exploit data and computing services in almost any mainframe, UNIX or PC environment. The SAS driver for JDBC allows any JDBC-compliant application to access SAS databases across the Web.

"SAS/IntrNet software users have already seen the benefits of using Web-based interfaces to reach information managed by SAS software," said Richard Neale, product manager at SAS Institute. "However, the expansion of Java-based tools means that a wider range of developers can tap into SAS applications. We see Java as a powerful infrastructure to provide a desktop Intelligent Client, a new standard that will insulate business users from the complexities of enterprise-wide systems. SAS/IntrNet software also provides sophisticated CGI and HTML methods to ensure that we are compatible with practically any existing environment."

SAS/IntrNet software, release 1.1, also includes the Warehouse Viewer(TM) application that allows users to browse data and information contained in a data warehouse. In addition, release 1.1 includes support for VRML graphics, an interactive 3D graphic format that helps users to visualise the hidden patterns in the data warehouse using a browser.
