SAS Institute Introduces Universal ODBC Driver

Anticipating customer needs to access SAS data through ODBC applications

SAS Institute has introduced the SAS Universal ODBC Driver. This opens up SAS data to ODBC applications outside existing SAS software applications. Users who build and populate a data mart or data warehouse using SAS software, generating data in PC, UNIX or OpenVMS environments, can use the ODBC driver to make this data available even if SAS software is not installed on the destination machine.

The SAS Universal ODBC Driver lets users open and query SAS tables and SAS Multidimensional databases using cross-host access capabilities to access SAS data formats created on non-Windows platforms. "The audience for the SAS Universal ODBC Driver is the person who needs a low-cost, read-only solution to access SAS data through an ODBC compliant application," said Jennifer Major, SAS Institute Data Warehousing product manager. "For example, business analysts may want to be able to look at data in their data warehouse using Microsoft Excel. The Universal ODBC driver will allow them to do this, even if the data is sitting on a UNIX box somewhere else in the company."

"It can read data from non-native systems such as HP, Sun, Digital, OS/2 and Macintosh" said Jennifer. "The data can be moved to the local system or can remain on the non-native system and accessed through either the FTP or HTTP protocols. All you need is local or network access to the data and the SAS Universal ODBC Driver."

The SAS Universal ODBC Driver, which is not subject to SAS Institutes normal licensing agreements, is available on Windows 95 and Windows NT and is priced at 105 for a single user. The Driver can be ordered by phoning the Distribution Department at SAS Institute on Tel: 01628 486933. Prices for multi-user versions are available on request.
