Lockheed Martin Launches Past The CompetitionWith SAS Institute's Web-enablement and Data warehousing technologyLockheed Martin Astronautics Space Launch Systems (SLS) is using SAS Institute's data warehousing, decision support, and project management capabilities to track production of the Titan IV, the largest and most powerful expendable space launch vehicle in the United States. The SAS software-based application, a data warehouse distributed on the Web, is designed to provide all managers working on the project to access information with ease, no matter where they are based. Lockheed Martin Astronautics is one of four operating elements of the company's Space and Strategic Missiles Sector, and designs, develops, tests and manufactures a variety of advanced technology systems for space and defence, including space systems, space launch systems and ground systems. Prior to the implementation of their Warehouse on the Web (WOW), managers often needed to wait weeks to get hold of vital information - and even then could only obtain summary level data. The SAS WOW application enables in depth information to be obtained on demand, enabling teams to track the status of work in progress at any time. The net benefit is to significantly improve the efficiency of the company's operations.
"Web enablement has proven to be a very cost-effective distribution strategy. Managers are able to hit the Web,
pull up any vehicle they want to look at, and see what work remains to be completed at any given level of the
process," said Art Rerecich, project group leader for Decision Support Systems at SLS. Lockheed Martin has also been nominated in the category of 'Best Web-to-Legacy Application Integration' for the 1998 US Business on the Internet (BOTI) Awards. The Awards recognise innovative organisations for their business application of Internet, Intranet, Extranet, and electronic commerce technologies. The award ceremony took place in California on 11 March 1998. |
