SAS Institute Announces Support for JAVA Development Kit 1.2

SAS Institute, the market leader in integrated data warehousing and decision support, has announced further expansion of its thin client development offerings through support for Sun Microsystems Inc.'s Java Development Kit (JDK)TM version 1.2. A premier JavaSoft development partner, SAS Institute has worked with Sun Microsystems throughout the development of this release. JDK 1.2 functionality will be leveragable at all levels of SA software’s architecture: on the client, in middleware, and on the server. This will further assist SAS Institute customers in the development of Web-enable, thin-client solutions for all their business intelligence applications.

"We believe that Sun Microsystem’s JDK 1.2 provides a solid foundation for delivering robust, enterprise-wide decision-support systems," said Richard Neale, SAS Institute UK’s product manager for we-enablement. "The new features in version 1.2, such as JDBC 2.0, new security APIs, JFC, and Java3D, will allow Institute customers to further extend their use of SAS software across the enterprise, helping them to maximise information availability as well as computing provision."

SAS Institute has also implemented a Java Futures Committee, tasked with understanding how Java augments SAS software Web-enablement. Future planned Institute technology releases such as SAS MetaSpace Explorer™ 2.0, a Web-based OLAP interface and AppDev Studio™, a development environment that Web-enables SAS applications, will take advantage of the new features in JDK 1.2 to increase performance and enhance user navigation of network information. The improved performance of the JDK 1.2 Java VM will also allow SAS customers to deploy enterprise-critical solutions written in Java.
