SAS Institute Brings Calm After the Storn to GAN Insurance

Data Warehousing DOES bring tangible benefits

In the aftermath of last week's Selsey Tornado, GAN Insurance has been able to assess the extent of possible insurance claims using their SAS software powered data warehouse. Without the data warehouse this process would normally take a number of days and would require a development programmer to interrogate the operational system. With SAS software however, this task was successfully performed in a matter of minutes, saving GAN Insurance time and money.

By entering the Selsey area postcode into the Data Warehouse interface, GAN was able to extract relevant policy details of all 53 customers living in the affected area. This allowed GAN to contact all customers to find out if they have been affected by the storms and their property damaged and to prepare for the influx of claims.

Mark Shepherd, Data Warehousing project manager at GAN Insurance said: "We are one year into the development of a SAS Data Warehouse for all classes of business. After the Selsey Tornado, we were able to put the system to the test ."

The 100mph tornado stormed through Selsey just before midnight, 7 January 1998, damaging more than 1,000 buildings. Although only lasting a few seconds, the trail of destruction left behind includes damaged roof slates, knocked down chimneys, broken windows and demolished sheds and garages. With a fifth of all properties affected, it is estimated that the bill to repair the seaside town could exceed 2 million. The average repair bill is expected to be in the region of 2,000.20
